when I picked it up in Las Vegas to California. The next day it drove like a tank and the check engine light came
So far I've replaced the PCV valve, all four coils, MAF sensor, Both O2 sensors, spark plugs & wires and the fuel injectors, the fuel pump and filter are clean and working fine. I've tried putting a different computer in the car butt nothing makes the check engine light stay off for more than 15 minutes at the most every time I try to reset the check engine light

I brought my 2000 Corolla to Quality Tune Up here in San Jose. The car has 136000 miles on it as of today. I've used them in the past and have had really good luck with them, BUT, it has been many years since I had.
The check engine light was on and car was idling A LITTLE rough. After leaving it there for hours, I received a phone call with a list of everything they found and the cost..2 bad ignition coils, spark plug replacement, valve cover replacement. They also changed the tranny fluid, (with my permission first). Forgot what else. I have the paperwork somewhere, almost $1000.00. They told me to be there at 5 to pick it up. Got there at 5, it wasn't quite ready yet.
Finally got the car and came home. About a mile. While driving home, the check engine light came on again. When I got home, I called them back and told them. They were getting ready to close and told me to come back the next day (Sunday) and drop it off. Was there when they opened Sunday. Another one of their technicians took a look at it, opened the dust cover of the engine, and started ranting and raving. The 2 bad ignition coils were still there. They did not get replaced. They then supposedly replaced them this time, checked everything, and sent me on my way.AGAIN. I got back home, check engine light again. Once again, I go back, they pull the dust cover remove 2 spark plugs, and show me evidence of a little oil on one of the cylinders and told me what could happen in time. NOW.after this, BOTH spark plugs are misplaced. After looking for 30 minutes all over, a phone call is made to someone to deliver new ones because they had no more of what was needed. OK.so.spark plugs are in, engine dust cover is back in place and they ask me to start it up.IT WON'T START. after looking around, they find 2 hoses that were not connected.sigh..OK.It starts after this, but, check engine light is on. They say there is nothing else they can do. I pay the almost $1000.00 and leave.with the check engine light still on.
A few weeks later, I am doing some preventative maintenance here at home and find a cable with a plug on it coming from an opening from the back of the engine dust cover. I also noticed that different hardware was used to re-attach the dust cover to the engine BUT the rear plastic hardware had been broken off and not replaced. Anyway, I figured out where the cable was to be connected to and connected it. Nothing changed after it was connected but I decided to drive up to Quality Tune Up and express my feelings. The manager that was previously there was not there, but, I spoke with another man there about the cable. He looked up the service order by my license plate to confirm I was indeed there, then came out and looked at everything. He found nothing else out of order. He did say he would try and get the broken plastic hardware needed for the dust cover. He never did..
NOW, after driving this car like this for a few months, it is now stalling on me while driving. There is a slight jerk, loss of power, and the engine dies. HOWEVER, I can put the car in neutral and it starts right back up very easily. Sometimes I can go a great distance without it stalling again. But today, it kept stalling numerous times. I finally got home. I'm not sure what to do now, I need my car to get to work and I don't have a lot of money to spend on it. Not with a double mortgage.
I saw something else on this site where the MAF was changed and it solved someones problems. This is a new filter on this car, maybe I should pull it and clean it and keep my fingers crossed. Does anyone else have any other suggestions that may help me?

For those that are dealing with the dreaded Corolla/Prizm 'Check Engine Light' it is a very annoying problem. It doesn't effect the performance of the car, but the light certainly brings many of us worries if driving off to somewhere far that it may fail. It's not very common for that to happen though, it's corolla and they are built to last. They are very reliable and durable as history has shown, but as over the years has gone, technology changes and do do the design in them especially with the complex computer system in the car making it more prone to annoying problems like the CEL. Here are the very solutions solutions to fix the CEL.
The Mass Airflow Sensor usually would need to be cleaned up. It's very easy to do, although you may have to do more research on the details, but you would not need to replaced it most of the time. Just spray some electrical cleaner that you can get from Radio Shack and it will take of the CEL. You just need to remove it from the engine which is located next to the airfilter. It's a semi-small elongated device that is attached to the filter and the electrically end needs to be unplugged and also removing two screws holding it in place.
If that doesn't work, chances are you need to replace the Oxygen Sensors. There are two of them, one in front of the car underneath it and the other is in the back underneath as well. You should buy the parts over the internet preferrably Denso because it's the brand that Toyota trust and use and so do I. It's also cheaper if you get the parts there instead of having your mechanic do it which he will charge you full price while he gets it for almost half of what it will normally cost. Get the parts, pay him for the labor, the light may not disappear right away because it has to run it's course to clean any current and old debris in the car. You'll have to be patient like run it good for a week and hopefully on the highway to really help clean it up. Also put a bottle of Fuel injector cleaner with a full tank of gas and just drive for a week.
I did this to my car and the CEL was gone after a week.

The Front and back Oxygen Sensor should cost you around 110.00 to 130.00 if you get them from the internet.
If that doesn't work, you may need to change the fuel filter and possibly catylitic converter.

changed the plugs. ran good for 10,000 miles. Uses 2 + quarts of oil between oil change (use synthetic oil). change every 5,000 miles. Now is missing again and the check engine light is on.

I have the same problem with my car. It's at 85k. The people at Toyota says that its the Charcoal Canister that needs to be changed. It regulates emission and does not affect the running of the car. It will only be a violation if you live in a state with emission laws.

I nicknamed this car CEL (short for 'check engine light') because the check engine light was on all. the. time.
At one point, it came on four separate times in one month. Something was always wrong with it. My 1989 Honda Accord hardly had any problems and it was at 200k miles.
This car was such a pain in the ass. Please don't let anyone you know purchase a car in this series.
